Montana Sales Tax Guide 2026
Montana is one of five states in the US with no sales tax — and unlike Alaska (which has no state tax but allows local municipalities to levy one), Montana has no local sales tax anywhere in the state either. A purchase in Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, or any Montana town carries no sales tax.
Montana's state constitution has historically favored funding government through income and property taxes rather than consumption taxes. The state does have targeted excise taxes on specific items: a 4% lodging sales tax on hotels and vacation rentals, a cigarette tax, alcohol taxes, and fuel taxes. But there is no general sales tax on retail merchandise.
For Montana residents, the practical benefit is most visible on large purchases. A $30,000 vehicle bought in Montana saves $1,200–$1,800 in sales tax compared to purchasing in Idaho (6%) or North Dakota (5%). Bozeman and Whitefish, which attract higher-income transplants, have retail markets that benefit meaningfully from the zero-sales-tax environment — particularly for furniture, electronics, and vehicles.
Montana's tourism industry operates within this no-sales-tax framework, but does collect a 4% lodging tax on accommodation. Visitors from high-sales-tax states sometimes assume Montana has a general sales tax since lodging tax appears on hotel receipts — it doesn't. The lodging tax is an earmarked tourism levy, not a general retail sales tax.
Montana is bordered by Idaho to the west (6% state sales tax) and Wyoming to the south (4% base, higher with local). Residents in border towns occasionally do cross-border shopping for specific goods, but Montana's own lack of sales tax means there's no reason to leave the state for sales-tax purposes.
