Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional and mathematically correct approach — you're tipping for the service, not the government's portion. In practice, the difference is small (about $1–2 on a $50 meal with 8% tax).

15% is the historical minimum for acceptable service. 18–20% is now the standard for good service. 25%+ is for exceptional service. For counter service or takeout, 10–15% is common but not required.

Simply divide the total tip by the number of people. If the total tip is $18 and there are 4 people, each person contributes $4.50. For equal splits, divide the entire bill including tip by the number of people.
